Last Monday's event on funding for innovation

23 February 2015, Sophia Woodley

Thank you to everyone who attended and spoke at our event last Monday on funding for innovation in the Creative Industries! We had an energising and enlightening morning in the spectacular setting of the Digital Catapult Centre, overlooking the spires of St. Pancras.

Highlights included Rosa Wilkinson of the Intellectual Property Office making a case for the essential role of IPR management in winning funding and investment; Sue Fraser of the Business Growth Service explaining how GrowthAccelerator can help SMEs access essential coaching and leadership and management training; Dan Licari of the Knowledge Transfer Network offering an overview of the funding landscape; Mandy Berry, Chief Executive of Cinegi, summing up the keys to start-up success ("Keep it simple, be open, form partnerships, be tenacious"); John Spindler, CEO of Capital Enterprise, offering a road map for funding for creative start-ups at every stage of growth; and Patrick Towell, CEO of Golant Media Ventures, pulling it all together.

“Hugely informative session, delivered with pace and passion," said Dr Danielle McCarthy, Principal Scientist, LRS. "I especially enjoyed Mandy’s open account of the challenges and success factors involved in delivering creative thinking throughout a business, including not only tech/science aspects but also innovative business models, IP use and platforms that interface with consumers. The vast array of funding and collaborative opportunities presented highlighted the support available to help deliver innovations across UK businesses.”

You can view the complete slide decks from the event, as well as accessing further resources, at our Slideshare. Also of interest may be our report for the IPO on how to make intellectual property more easily traded and financed.

After the event, we enjoyed the chance to meet and share ideas with participants from across the Creative Industries. While we had planned half an hour for networking, quite a few people stayed for over an hour!
